Fall 2013 Class information
Wednesdays, September 11 – October 16
Each course contains six (6) 90-minute classes which are held on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:00 PM.
Science Lab!: Ages 7&8
Put on your safety goggles! In this class, students will explore Physical Science topics from the NC Essential Standards such as weather, matter and sound. Students will develop skills of observation, measurement and number sense as they actively participate in investigations. During investigations, students will have the opportunity to use tools such as force sensors, thermometers, rulers, balances and microscopes to gather data and extend their senses. The Scientific Method will be introduced and practiced using drawings and models to communicate results and explanations of investigations and experiments. This class will give your student a jump start in working cooperatively and using scientific tools.
Anatomy & Physiology: Ages 9-11
It’s time to study…yourself! In this class, students will learn the human body systems and understand how they are essential to life. We will compare skeletal structures of different animals (including humans!) to gain insight into our own body forms and how they function. How does your circulatory system react to changes in your environment? We will learn about homeostasis by investigating how our body maintains a stable core temperature, and study the digestive and nervous systems with hands-on labs. It might sound gross, but…it’s you!
Wednesdays, October 23 – November 13
This course contains four (4) two-hour classes which are held on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30 PM.
Advanced Anatomy & Physiology: Girls ages 12-14
How does a nerve cell fit into the big picture of…you? In this class, we will delve into the study of the human body in detail, using advanced study skills and focused techniques. Students will study the anatomy and physiology of humans while gaining an understanding of how body systems and their components function and interact with each other. Hands-on labs will help us gain insight into the cardiovascular system, while comparative anatomy will show us how form and function interact. By studying different levels of organization in the body, students will gain a better understanding of the whole organism. This class is a great way to develop advanced study methods (high school note-taking and memorization skills) with an appreciation for the amazing complexity within us!
