Happy July and August, Volunteers!
August 4, 2006

A special e-newsletter for our volunteers.

Greetings and Salutations!

Happy summer, volunteers! I hope you've been enjoying some rest and relaxation (and as much air conditioning as you desire...).

Here in downtown Asheville, we're in the middle of Construction City. It's beeninteresting to watch plans develop for the new downtown area, but it's caused more than a few complicationsfor our summer camps. Luckily, theyhaven't closed offPack Square itself just yet!

Summer camps have beengreat this year. Campers, staff, interns, and volunteers alike have beenenjoying the joys of water (complete with Pirate Greybeard), the body, fizz and bubble, and the brain. It's been wonderful to see the sea of yellow camp t-shirts meandering through the museum on their way to the next big adventure. Today is the last day of camp--our GIRLS Quest camp. They've been enjoying trips around the community to see the landfill, the hospital, and more.

Plans are also progressing for a brandnew stage show. The new show, funded by a grant from IMLS, is our first with a science theme. Entitled "Gotta Move:The Great Big Motion Show," this show features the hilarious scientific stylings of our very own Wheely and Flo (otherwise known as Heather Wieler and Glo DeAngelis, two of our educators extraordinaire...). They're workinghardin rehearsals, learning new songs, and putting together what promises to be a fabulous show. The show will premiere with a special preview performance at Vance Elementary later this month.

As another part of the grant and stage show, there will be a new TheHealth Adventure CD.The new "Momentum"CD is in final production now. Mark your calendars now for theCD release party, scheduled for October 14 at 1:00 (with a clown showin the morning that same day). The party will feature live versions of some of the new songs, food, and more.I've already gotten several songs stuck in my head!

Also approaching are the Red Riot Party on August 19and this year's Fall Gala on September 30. Readbelow for more information about these great fundraisers!

Welcome!

We're happy to welcome new volunteers to The Health Adventure family! Whatever your interests, The Health Adventure has an opportunity for you. This month, we welcome these new faces...

Molly Zaslow and Lily Hiott-Millis join us as a new dynamic duo working on the floor in the afternoons. Molly and Lily will spend time working with our curiosity carts, leading public programs at our touch tanks, and helping our floor staff. Welcome, Molly and Lily!

Kasey Christian joins us as an intern for the summer (and part of the fall). Kasey is a rising senior in the new Health Promotions major at UNCA. Kasey will spend her time here helping with camps, working our curiosity cart activities, observing and helping in the "Raceways" exhibit, and more. Kasey looks forward to learning new teaching techniques. Welcome, Kasey!

Caleb Lee joins us for the summer from the NC School of Science and Math. Caleb has become an almost permanent fixture in the educators' office over the past two weeks. He spends half of the day in a camp classroom and half of the day helping our educators. Although he met his hour requirement a long time ago, Caleb will stick around to help Wheelie and Flow as their stage manager during rehearsals. Welcome, Caleb!

Emma Hanna joins us as a summer camp volunteer. She has volunteered for several Girl Scout camps and enjoys working with younger children. Emma was a great asset to our "Young Adventurers in Inside the Body" camp earlier this summer. Welcome, Emma!

Katie Hanna also joins us as a summer camp volunteer. Katie came to our camps as a camper and was even interviewed by WLOS! Katie has volunteered for Girl Scout camps andworked a Kids Voting booth during the last Presidential election. She enjoys working with younger children. Welcome, Katie!

Rebekah Grella found us at a volunteer fair at the American Red Cross. She has worked this summer as a volunteer in our summer camp. Rebekah enjoys babysitting, volunteering in the nursery, helping children learn. Rebekah even came in for her orientation the morning after having her wisdom teeth pulled! Welcome, Rebekah!

Madeline Leetz initially planned to join us as a summer camp volunteer, but scheduling changes prevented her from volunteering. Now, she's coming in on a fairly regular basis and helping us in the office. Madeline has done everything from help restock the grocery store to prepare camp graduation diplomas, and we love having her in the office! Welcome, Madeline!

James Prim also joins us this summer as a summer camp volunteer. James is a college sophomore and competes on his school's gymnastics team. In other volunteer activities, James has tutored refuge children ages 8-17 and taught gymnastics. Welcome, James!

Volunteer Outings

We want to see you!

One of our goals for this year is to host a volunteer outing or special event every quarter. This is just one small way for us to say THANK YOU for everything you do for us. As we begin planning for this year, I'd love to know your thoughts and ideas. Do you know of a secret hideaway or hidden hot spot that you'd like to share with your fellow volunteers? What about a favorite hiking spot? A great place to visit in a nearby town? I'd love to hear your suggestions and ideas.

Have a hot spot? Know of a nook? Seen a scenic scene? Hiked a happy trail? Send it my way! More details will come soon about this quarter's volunteer adventure.
