Merry May, Volunteers!
May 26, 2006

A special e-newsletter for our special volunteers.

Greetings!

The flowers are blooming, the courtyard fountain is running, and summer camps are filling up...that means it must be spring at The Health Adventure!

This month we bid farewell to our popular "Rainforest ALIVE!" exhibit. The last public day is Sunday, May 28th. If you haven't been by to see this great exhibit or one of the fabulous public programs, be sure to come by this weekend. We'd love to see you!

On June 9, we'll be opening our next exhibit, "Raceways." This fun exhibit features games and interactive stations that let guests send golf balls looping, racing, spinning, and zinging over ramps, on tracks, and through chutes--all to demonstrate physics concepts. Exhibit areas have fun science facts in both English and Spanish. Come learn about the laws of motion (and have fun while you're at it...)!

Summer camp volunteer slots are still available in June and July, but they're booking fast! If you know of anyone age 14 and up who may be interested, please let me know! More information on summer camp opportunities is included below.

Welcome New Volunteers

New volunteers are always welcome at The Health Adventure! We are happy to introduce several new summer camp volunteer faces to our museum's family.

Joanna Leslie joins us as a Young Adventurers summer camp volunteer. She was a camp attendee several years ago during one of our GIRLS Quest camps and wanted to join us as a volunteer ever since. Joanna is an active Girl Scout and looks forward to spending time with our campers. Welcome, Joanna!

Dominique Duncan is also a new Young Adventurers volunteer. Dominique is active in theatre andIrish dance and looks forward to working with our campers in an educational setting. Welcome, Dominique!

Mary Katherine O'Donnell joins us for this year's Young Adventurers camp. Mary helped with the recent Asheville Community Theatre production of "The Wizard of Oz", performed as Mother Superior in the Asheville Arts Center's production of "The Sound of Music," and assists in several Irish dance classes. Mary looks forward to making new friends and learning in a fun environment. Welcome, Mary!

Caitlin Bradley will join us for both Young Adventurers and Discover Science campsthis summer as part of a service project through Asheville School. Caitlin has volunteered for MANNA FoodBank, The Nature Center, and at Emma school. She looks forward to working with the kids during camp!

Tim O'Donnell joins us for Discover Science camp this summer. Tim has helped with stage productions and enjoys cycling andskateboarding. He looks forward to the experience of volunteering with this year's summer camps. Welcome, Tim!

We are also happy to welcome back All Fuller and Holly Schryer as volunteers for this summer's camps!

Rainforest ALIVE tear-down

Any time!

It's time to send our animals and their habitats back to Catawba. We'll need help dismantling cages, removing decorations, cleaning habitats, and preparing all exhibit pieces for transport. Any hands are welcome! Cleaning cages is helpful but not required...If you'd like to help but don't want to deal with the...um..."messy" part of an animal exhibit, there's plenty of other stuff that needs to be done!

Raceways Member Opening
Thursday, June 8
4:00-8:30 p.m.

Volunteers, start your engines! Or at least polish your golf balls... "Raceways" is our exciting new temporary exhibit. Guests will send golf balls careening around curves, slipping down slides, and rolling over ramps as they learn to have fun with physics. During this special member preview, we need volunteers to greet guests, replenish refreshments, assist in the exhibit space, and help with setup and tear-down duties.

Friday, June 9
8:00-10:00 a.m.

Let's Go Fly a Kite!
Thursday, June 15
11:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Take advantage of those blustery Asheville days and help us on a special kite excursion during this year's Pack Place Potpourri camp. We need volunteers to lead campers to the MLK Park and assist with a great kite-making activity. Once their kites are ready, campers will be able to test out their creations! Great fun for all...

Everything is a riot at The Health Adventure during this special fundraising event! Part of our new "Humor is Healthy" campaign, this event encourages guests towear red--as much as they want--and laugh for the health of it! We'll have red food, red decorations, and we promise your face will be red from laughing so hard at our special comedians. Tickets for this event are only $10, so we hope for a large crowd. Volunteers are needed throughout the event to help setup, lead games and activities, greet guests, take tickets, staff refreshment stations, tear-down, and more! Join us for this great event...it's sure to be a riot!

A Fond Farewell

The Health Adventure bids a very fond farewell this month to Todd Boyette, our President and CEO. Todd joined our organization in 1999 and has been a vital asset to our organization. From helping us begin the process of designing a new facility to teaching us that NC State red is a sacred color, he has left his mark on all of us. Todd has accepted a position as the director of the Morehead Planetarium. The move offers him a chance to be closer to some of his family. We all wish Todd the best of luck in his new adventure (and plan on coercing him into giving us free tickets to the planetarium!).
