Sound Science - Grades 2 thru 3 |
Program Objectives: With our teaching staff, students will:
- Explore frequency and amplitude with instruments and tuning forks.
- Experiment with how sound travels through the air and through various solids.
- Learn the parts and function of the human ear.
Suggested Classroom Activities:
1) Use a tape recorder and have a couple of students make a “sound collection” of common sounds around the school (playground, cafeteria, halls, water running, office telephones). Then, play back to see if class can identify the locations.
2) Fill several plastic water or soft drink bottles with varying amounts of water, then blow across the tops: which ones make the lowest-pitched sound?
3) Make an old-fashioned string telephone using plastic cups with a length of string between them. Pull the string tight: take turns talking and listening. Ask students, “How are the vibrations are traveling?”
4) Watch a video with the sound turned off. Ask students “What would it be like to be deaf?” Resources:
