Happy Summer, Volunteers!
May 24, 2007

A special e-newsletter for our volunteers

Salutations!

Greetings, Volunteers! I hope this last full week of May finds you happy, healthy, and enjoying the beautiful mountain weather we've been having. I've done some work in my garden (and gotten my first obligatory sunburn...), so that must mean summer is approaching rapidly.

There's a flurry of activity at The Health Adventure. Classes for the year are winding down as schools finish testing and final requirements, but excitement is building about this year's summerscience camps. We're also in the process of installing a new member card system with a bar-code scanner...welcome to the modern world! Our exhibits staff is hard at work putting up our new traveling exhibit, "The Magic School Bus Kicks Up a Storm." From the pieces I've seen, it's going to be an amazing exhibit. The exhibit opens to the public this Saturday, May 26.

I hope to see many of you over the summer, either as guests exploring the new exhibit or as volunteers helping with activities, camps, and other programs.

Welcome New Volunteers!

The Health Adventure is happy to welcome new volunteers to our facility family!

Crystal Roberts joins us as a summer camp volunteer from the Buncombe Community School. Crystal has great hands-on experience with kids...she has 16 cousins under the age of 7! She's also worked in daycare facilities and is excited to start volunteering. Welcome, Crystal!

Laura Whisenant also joins us as a new summer camp volunteer. Laura is a student at TC Roberson, and she also volunteers at the Asheville Humane Society. She loves science and working with kids, and she's looking forward to a chance to combine the two. Welcome, Laura!

Bryan Morris is a new summer camp volunteer working in our Young Adventurers program. Brian is the son of our Finance Director, Mitzi, and he's excited to get involved with our camp programs!

We're also very happy to welcome back Holly Schryer, All Fuller, Rebekah Grella, Emma Hanna, Joanna Leslie, and Dominique Duncan. These dedicated volunteers are returning to summer camp this year, and we're so glad to have them back!

Do you know someone who may be interested in volunteering? Spaces are still available in our Young Adventurers camps for volunteers age 14 and up. ONE space remains in our Discover Science summer camps for volunteers age 16 and up. We also have space available in our "Magic School Bus" exhibit program leading activities with our guests. Information about our volunteer and internship programs is available on our website by following the link below.

Summer Volunteer Opportunities

During the summer of 2004, The Health Adventure started a new summer volunteer program. Each summer, youth, college students, and adults from across the community join us as volunteers and interns. They work directly with our campers, supervising during free periods, helping in the camp classrooms, and serving as critical assistants to our camp teachers.

Spaces are still available in both Young Adventurers' camps, June 11-15 and June 18-22, for rising 1st and 2nd graders. Our camp programs emphasize an interactive approach to learning and exploration. We welcome applications from volunteers age 14 and up for Young Adventurers camps.

Young Adventurers in Space explores what it's like to be an astronaut, eat space food, and walk on the moon. Campers will explore the galaxy, build a planet, experiment with gravity, invent an animal that could survive on Jupiter, discover a new constellation and tell its story.

Young Adventurers' Animal Anticshelps campers become animal investigators! From mammals to bugs, from fish to fowl, they'll discover how animals live and the surprising things they do. With animal scavenger hunts, a chance to practice bird calls, and close encounters with the animal kingdom, this camp promises to be fun for all!

We also have ONE spot remaining in our morning July 9-13 Discover Science ToyLab camp for any volunteer age 16 and up. This camp explores the science of toys...what makes things tick? How do you make your own? Campers will fly a boomerang, grow a crystal, design a boat, make 3-D glasses, play a clown bagpipe, and more.

Volunteers must submit an application form (available by emailing JessicaL@thehealthadventure.org or visiting the website below), have a successful in-person interview with museum staff, commit to one full Monday-Friday week of camp, and attend a mandatory orientation session. Volunteer positions are open to current and new volunteers.
