Happy Holidays!
November 30, 2006

A special e-newsletter for our volunteers

Greetings and salutations!

Happy holidays to you and yours! Despite the recent bout of warm weather, I've been enjoying the chilly evenings and the occasional glow of a fire in my fireplace.

Here at The Health Adventure, classes are still going strong as we approach the holiday breaks. Our guests are thoroughly enjoying the new "Flip it, Fold it, Figure it Out!" exhibit, which features interactive stations on various math concepts. Play with quilt squares, fold origami, measure volumes, and more! You can even analyze the relationship between your shoe size and your height. This exhibit closes on December 31, so be sure to come by and see it soon!

Next on our schedule is the arrival of "Little Builders," scheduled to open on January 19, 2007. "Little Builders" features some of the favorite components of the "Busytown" exhibit we hosted several years ago.

We are also starting to look even further ahead to the summer season. Potential summer volunteers have already begun calling, so I anticipate another great group of interns and camp volunteers.

All of us at The Health Adventure wish you a safe and happy holiday season, whatever your plans and holidays may be, and we look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

Folding Frenzy!

Have you seen our holiday tree this year? As usual, it features an impressive array of folds--everything from purple dragons to Clifford the Big Red Dog and more. For the first time this year, we're also accepting donations of canned goods, which we will donate to MANNA FoodBank. Guests who arrive with a canned good on Saturday, December 9 will receive half-price admission. Donations will be taken to MANNA the week of December 11. Come see what you can find on this year's tree!

We'll also be hosting TWO origami workshops on December 9 at 12:30 and 1:30. These hour-long programs will teach participants various origami folds. Come join ourvolunteer folders forthis folding frenzy! Space is limited to 30 people per class, so pre-registration is highly recommended. (254-6373 x329)

Welcome New Volunteers!

The Health Adventure is happy to welcome several new volunteers this quarter. We hope you'll see them around the museum soon!

We now have a regular group of students coming on Saturdays from Asheville School. These students help with various activities on the floor, assisting with birthday parties, activities, and more. Welcome, Asheville School!

Carol Anders and Sally Hearn will begin volunteering in February, possibly as station leaders for our wonderful Dental Month programs (this year features the return of "Flossed in Space!"). They both offer experience in teaching and as program leaders, and we look forward to seeing them interact with our guests! Welcome, Carol and Sally!

Charles Young will also be joining us soon helping with the new Afternoon Explorers program. This program will allow after-school groups to come to the museum late in the afternoon for either a guided experience or a special program. Charles will be coming soon to observe one of these programs and begin training. Welcome, Charles!

Tiana Pimentel joins us as a youth volunteer. Tiana swooped in during the after-Thanksgiving rush and helped keep our floor staff sane. Tiana will be helping on the museum floor, interacting with our guests and leading activities. Welcome, Tiana!

Elaine Shelton is a service-learner from AB-Tech. She'll be spending her time working with our guests on the museum floor. Welcome, Elaine!

Leah Barr also joins us from AB-Tech. In the midst of a job, school, and her two year-old, Leah will be here interacting with groups and leading activities on the floor. Welcome, Leah!

Parris Marks joins us from UNCA as a service-learner in the health promotions department. She's helped with our physics phestival and numerous activities on the museum floor. Welcome, Parris!

We welcome all of our new volunteers and hope their experiences here are grand!

Volunteer Opportunities

Opportunities about here at The Health Adventure! Our primary needs are for volunteers available Tuesday-Friday from 10:00-2:00 to work with general admission guests and school groups as they explore our facility. Volunteers are welcome at any time and in any area of our organization. Whatever your interests, we have a position for you!

Dental Month Assistants
Dates: Throughout February 2007
Times: TBD

It's time once again for Dental Month! The Health Adventure will open its doors throughout the month to hundreds of local school groups, transporting them into the space-themed world of "Flossed in Space." Featuring its own alien and plaque-destroying rays, students will learn the importance of dental health. We are looking for a few very dedicated, very reliable volunteers to assist on a regular basis during the month of February. Volunteers must be able to attend training sessions and commit to a set schedule for the month.

Technology Assistant
Dates: Any!
Times: Any!
Volunteers Needed: Any!

Are computers or software your "thing"? Do you know exactly what to do with old computer parts and have a brain that can organize technology CDs in your sleep? Then we want to talk! We need tech-savvy volunteers who are available to help our IT coordinator maintain our hardware and software. If you laugh at the words "dot matrix", this job just might be for you!

Little Builders Activity Leaders
Dates: May 26-September 28
Times: Museum open hours (Tu-Sat, 10-5, Sun 1-5)

Do you like building? Then this exhibit's for you! We'relooking for a few good volunteers who are interested in leading "Little Builders" activities with our guests. These activities will be interactive components that supplement the exhibit and offer an additional experience for guests.

From August 16 on, we'll also be doing an intensive push with area schools to encourage them to bring groups to the museum to see the exhibit before it leaves (groups usually do not schedule visits with us that early in the school year...). We will need also volunteers in the exhibit to interact with groups during their visits.

Annual Volunteer Luncheon

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing many of you at this year's annual volunteer luncheon! It's always so nice to see all of you gathered in one room--committee members, youth volunteers, clowns, fundraisers, board members, administrative volunteers, founding mothers, advisors, and more. I'm amazed every day by your never-ending dedication to and passion for our mission. Your work in support of our organization is truly an inspiration.

Thank you for all that you do for us each and every day!
